Canvin Keen On Canaries Clash

We spoke with Marlow’s goal-getting Abi Canvin about reaching the SSE Women’s FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round for the first time and being drawn away to Premier League Norwich City on October 11th.

Southern League Marlow won their SSE Women’s FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round tie 7-3 away at Wargrave of the Thames Valley Counties League on Sunday September 20th.

SK: Tell us a little of your playing career
AC: I have been playing at Marlow for 12 seasons now, we won the [Southern Division 1] league last season to be promoted into the Southern Region Premier League, I have been the League’s top goalscorer for the past two seasons and top scorer with Marlow for the past 12 consecutive seasons.

SK: How did you feel about winning at Wargrave?
AC: Winning was a massive individual achievement but also a massive achievement for the team and for Marlow Ladies as a football club. We have never reached the 3rd Round Qualifying before, so we are looking forward to our next game. We believe in each other and we always play as a team, so we are hoping to reach the First Round Proper – this would be our ultimate goal and a very big achievement.

SK: How did the scoring go?
AC: We were 2-0 up within the first 8 minutes of the game, one of the goals coming from the penalty spot. Pegged back to 4-2 by half time, we started the second half with another early goal and finally the game finished 7-3. Goals coming from myself (x 3), Louise Ekins, Tracey Corkett and Samantha Jackson.

SK: What do you think to the draw?
AC: We are excited to play Norwich City Ladies in the next round of the FA Cup, it will be a great experience for all of our players.

SK: Has your season begun well?
AC: We have started the new season exactly how we finished the end of last season, we are currently three games in and we are still unbeaten, taking our crazy run to an impressive 12 games unbeaten in all competitions

SK: What are your expectations for this campaign
We have great expectations, winning the league last season and being promoted into a harder league, we are aiming for a comfortable mid-table finish and anything else is a bonus.
