Bristol’s Copa Lucrecia Lindo 2015

BLINC (Bristol Link with Nicaragua) report that they are once again organising a women’s five-a-side football tournament to raise some funds for a girls Football and Life Skills project in Granada, on the shores of lake Nicaragua, Central America.

I was lucky enough to visit the project last September and it is going really well. Also thanks to Easton Cowgirls for the donation of shirts for the project which have been taken out by a volunteer this week.

The tournament is named after Nicaraguan heroine and revolutionary martyr, Lucrecia Lindo, whose name is taken by many women’s projects, co-operatives and campaigns in present-day Nicaragua. BLINC has supported the Lucrecia Lindo women’s shrimp farming co-operative since it started in 1986 with sixteen women and today almost 100 people rely on it.

BLINC has agreed that the Copa Lucrecia Lindo takes place at the same time as the Copa Sandino on Sunday 17th May 2015 at Ashton Park School, Blackmoors Lane, Bower Ashton BS3 2JL.

We will be using two pitches this year – one grass and one astro to speed up the tournament. For the astro pitch only astro trainers or moulded plastic studs or ordinary trainers are allowed (ie no metal studs or blades of any type please). You will need a minimum of five players but in our experience a squad of seven is best. Arrive at 10am and matches start at 10.30. There will be hot latino lunches served from 12pm and changing rooms and  showers are available. The school has kindly agreed to give us the pitches for free to support our project so a big muchas gracias to them.

BLINC will provide a trophy, referees, balls and bibs although please try and ensure your team all wear the same colour shirts. Copa Lucrecia Lindo rules will be sent out along with sponsor forms and other details once you have booked a place. We are asking each player to raise £10 with a minimum of £50 per team of five.

If you would like to enter a team in this year’s Copa Lucrecia Lindo, please send your team’s name, contact details and a £50 deposit cheque made out to BLINC or via bank transfer (contact Steve [email protected] for details) To A.Hughes, BITA, CREATE Centre, Smeaton Road, Bristol BS16 2JP
