Bristol ‘Capable Of Finishing The Job’

Bristol Academy face a stern test in the second leg tie against Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16 on Thursday at Ashton Gate, 7.30pm, following their 1-0 victory in Spain last week.

The Vixens overcame a Spanish side that had previously been unbeaten at home in 55 attempts. Dave Edmondson will be thankful to have the same 18 player squad from the Barcelona away leg all fit, with just one yellow card for Sophie Ingle to worry about. Academy will look to finish the job on Thursday and continue in a competition in which they are treading new ground, having never progressed past the round of 32 previously.

Manager Dave Edmondson said ahead of the tie:

‘The own goal gives us a precarious but potentially important 1-0 lead going into this second leg at Ashton Gate.

‘I hope we can get a large crowd of vocal and passionate Bristolians to drive the Vixens on in our mission to reach the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League. It will be a tough task against a very good Barcelona side so every little bit of backing will be much appreciated!’

Vixens’ Captain, Jemma Rose:

‘Upon reflection from Saturday’s match there are a lot of positives to take from the game in terms of our defensive discipline and mentality. However, although we won the game 1-0, Barcelona are an extremely talented team in terms of their movement and ability on the ball, therefore we must create more chances after winning the ball back. We all train every day to be involved in these types of matches and I know the girls are extremely excited to walk out at Ashton Gate on Thursday evening and we are more than capable of finishing the job.’

Barcelona manager Xavi Llorens’ team are playing in the competition for the third time and they come into the match in excellent form after eight games without defeat prior to Saturday’s smash and grab victory for the Vixens. Academy will have to look out for star striker Sònia Bermúdez Tribano, who troubled the Academy defence in the first leg.

Kick-off at Ashton Gate on Thursday is 7.30pm, click here to purchase your tickets as the Vixens look to make history!
