Brazil is the first South American nation to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™.
Brazil qualified after back-to-back victories in the Copa America final round, with the clinching win on Friday 26 September 2014 in Sangolqui, Ecuador.
Despite a 2-0 first round group stage defeat to Argentina, the Brazilians hit the same opposition for six in the final phase with a goal apiece from Cristiane, Andressa, Maurine, Tayla, Tamires and Raquel.
Colombia are on course to finish runners-up in the Copa America but need a point against Brazil on Sunday, or for Argentina to fail to beat Ecuador.
Brazil is the 14th finalist confirmed for next year’s final competition, which will be played from 6 June to 5 July in six host cities across Canada. Brazil is one of two CONMEBOL nations that will qualify this month, with the other to qualify on Sunday 28 September.
With back-to-back wins, Brazil will finish either first or second amongst the final four teams in the Copa America final round.
Brazil’s competitors in this final round are Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador. The top-two teams will qualify for Canada 2015 while the third-place team will advance to a CONCACAF-CONMEBOL playoff that will take place in November.
From 129 competing nations, the 24 finalists will all be known by late November ahead of the 6 December 2014 Official Draw.
The 14 finalists already confirmed are Canada (host), Brazil from South America, England, France, Germany, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland from Europe, and Australia, China, Japan, South Korea and Thailand from Asia.
