Black Confident Of Reaching UWCL Q-Fs

Glasgow City defender Emma Black is confident her side can get the result needed to overturn the first leg 2-1 defeat at the hands of FC Zurich in the Champions League, when they face the Swiss again at Excelsior Stadium Airdrie, tomorrow at 7.30pm.

A Fiona Brown strike at the start of the second half, gave City a precious away goal, but the Scottish Champions lost 2-1 on the night and were also reduced to ten players after full back Nicky Docherty was shown two yellow cards and dismissed with 15 minutes remaining.

Docherty is joined in suspension by Julie Nelson after her yellow card in Zurich became her second of the Champions League campaign. Striker Brown was also stretchered off in the match and is looking very unlikely to be able to play any part in the return fixture. However, despite the loss of 3 starting players, City give a welcome return to striker Susan Fairlie, who had been out with a virus and she will be a massive boost to Wolecki Black’s fragile squad.

Captaining City in Zurich, Emma Black knows her side did not play to their capabilities and are determined to reverse the result at the Excelsior Stadium.

She said, “I feel we let ourselves down, which sadly is not the first time for the opening leg in Champions League knock out rounds. We know we can do much better than we shown in the away game on Sunday and we are confident we can get the result we need.

“Getting the away goal is a huge boost, along with having Susan Fairlie back in the squad after having to travel without her for the first leg. Games don’t come much bigger than the chance to reach the quarter finals of the Champions League and we will be going all out to win and get the result we need.”

Glasgow City take on FC Zurich on Wednesday 12th November at Excelsior Stadium, Airdrie. Kick off is 7.30pm and spectators can pay at the turnstile. Entry is £5 adults, £2 Under 16’s. If City get the result they need, they will be the first Scottish team ever to reach the Quarter Finals of the Champions League.
