West Brom have confirmed the signing of promising England U17 defender Lucy Day on a dual-registration deal from Birmingham City.

The England Under-17 international joins Siobhan Hodgetts-Still’s squad as the team continues its strong start to the 2025-26 season in the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division.

Day has already made her mark at youth level, playing an important role in Birmingham City’s PGA Cup triumph earlier this year.

Her move to Albion offers the young defender an opportunity to gain valuable first-team experience while continuing her development at Birmingham City.

Why West Brom signed Lucy Day

West Brom manager Siobhan Hodgetts-Still expressed her delight at welcoming Lucy Day into the squad, especially ahead of a demanding run of fixtures beginning with Wednesday’s clash against Rugby Borough.

“We’re delighted to welcome Lucy into the squad,” said Siobhan.

“She’s a talented and determined player who brings valuable experience, in spite of her age, playing for Birmingham City and at international youth level.

“We’re looking forward to giving her opportunities for first-team action and supporting her development on the pitch.

“She’s a tenacious defender who relishes winning her individual battles and I’m really looking forward to working with her.”

Hodgetts-Still has built a solid foundation this season, with Albion currently sitting fourth in the Women’s National League Northern Division, the third tier of English football.

The addition of Day further strengthens a back line that has been key to the team’s early momentum.

What are dual-registration deals?

Dual registration allows players to be registered with and play for two different clubs.

This arrangement is used to help with the player’s development while still having the original club’s registration preserved.

Birmingham City highlighted Day’s move as part of their wider development strategy for young players. The club confirmed that four members of their Under-21 squad have taken up dual-registration opportunities across the region.

Midfielder Grace Ratcliffe has joined Stourbridge, Latia Blake has signed with Solihull Moors and Jess Bryers has linked up with Alvechurch.

Looking ahead

For Day, the switch to Albion represents an important step in her career. The move offers her a chance to test herself against senior opposition in one of the most competitive leagues in the women’s game while contributing to Albion’s push up the table.

With her determination, defensive strength and growing experience at club and international level, Lucy Day’s arrival adds both quality and depth to an ambitious Albion side eager to build on their positive start to the season.

Birmingham City meanwhile are hopeful of winning promotion to the WSL. Amy Merricks, in an exclusive interview with SheKicks in September, spoke about what the Blues need to do to win the WSL2 this season.
