FIFA are to make a number of concessions to women’s national teams in terms of World Cup preparation, travel, accomodation and prize money ahead of next year’s tournament.
Some of the improved conditions are:
- Flight upgrades to business class will be paid except for team flights under four hours
- Total prize money to significantly increase from the $15 million at 2015 tournament
- Compensation for women’s clubs releasing players to national team duty for the World Cup
- Opposing teams do not have to stay at the same hotel *
The figure for the 2019 World Cup will be agreed next month ($440 million is the prize pot for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar).
Men’s World Cup champions France earned $38 million from FIFA, while the United States got just $2 million for winning the 2015 Women’s World Cup.
*Hotel sharing is prohibited in men’s World Cup rules.
