Barnsley FC Women completed their North East League Premier Division fixtures with a 6-3 home win over Wakefield AFC at Oakwell.
Already assured of the title after winning 4-0 at Wallsend on Sunday, Barnsley built a 2-0 lead through Betty Cheetham and Jodie Gregory before being pegged back to level terms when the visitors scored with the last action of the first half deep into stoppage time.
It did not take long after the break for Barnsley to rebuild a two-goal cushion with Gregory and Amy Dawson on the mark. Gregory then completed her hat-trick. Wakefield made it 5-3 and Nic Shaw completed proceedings scoring shortly before the final whistle.
The League trophy was presented by Barnsley’s legendary athlete Dorothy Hyman (winner of gold, silver and bronze medals at Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and European Championships 1958 to 1964) to the delight of a crowd which topped 500.
Next up for the Tykes is the League Cup Final against Sunderland’s Under-23 team at Norton this Sunday, before Barnsley begin a new chapter in tier 4 as they embark on life in the FA Women’s National League in the 2024-25 season.
