Australia and Japan qualify for Women’s Olympics Tournament

Australia and Japan have booked their places at the Paris 2024 Olympics after progressing through the Asian qualifiers.

While the Matildas cruised past Uzbekistan 13-0 over two legs, Japan narrowly eliminated North Korea 2-1 on aggregate.

The two nations join Brazil, Canada, Colombia, France, Spain, New Zealand and USA as the confirmed qualifiers to date.

Australia were three up from the away leg in Uzbekistan, Michelle Heyman scored four goals of her own in the first half of the second leg. Kaitlyn Torpey, Caitlin Foord, Mary Fowler, Hayley Raso and Amy Sayer added one apiece, while the visitors conceded two own goals.

Japan and North Korea were goalless after their first meeting, but in Tokyo Hana Takahashi and Aoba Fujino gave the Nadeshiko a 2-0 lead.

Kim Hyeyong pulled a late goal back but Japan held out to secure their place in Paris.
