Aston Villa’s Lucia Kendall earns first England call-up for October friendlies

Lucia Kendall has earned her first senior call-up for England

Lucia Kendall was one of two Aston Villa stars to be called up to Sarina Wiegman’s England squad for their upcoming October friendlies.

Who is Lucia Kendall?

Lucia Kendall is one of the most exciting youngsters in the WSL. The 21-year-old signed for Aston Villa in the summer, after spending five years with Southampton.

When the Saints were relegated to WSL2 last season there were plenty of top-flight clubs vying for Kendall’s signature.

Kendall has started four of Villa’s games so far this season, building up an impressive partnership with Missy Bo Kearns.

Kearns made her debut for the Lionesses just before Euro 2025 but wasn’t selected as part of England’s tournament squad.

The 24-year-old has been selected alongside Kendall for the Lionesses upcoming international friendlies.

Kendall is a versatile player, but Sarina Wiegman already has clear plans on what position to play the youngster in.

“At the moment, I see her as a midfielder,” explained Wiegman. “I think she has performed really well for Aston Villa and I really want to see her there.

“I think her positioning and game understanding is really good. Her game understanding, reading the game really well, being tough in duels but also in possession doing well.”

When will Lucia Kendall make England debut?

While Kendall has been selected for the England squad, there is no guarantee that she’ll make her debut this month.

England’s midfield is one of the best in the world and the experienced Georgia Stanway, Grace Clinton, Jess Park, Ella Toone and Keira Walsh will all be preferred to the Villa star.

With that being said, it would be a surprise if Kendall was to not feature at some point for England against either Brazil or Australia.

There are still two years until the 2027 World Cup and Kendall has plenty of time to throw her name in Wiegman’s hat ahead of the tournament.
