Arsenal vs Lyon preview

Arsenal kick off their Women’s Champions League campaign with a difficult home clash against French champions Lyon.

The Gunners start their defence of the Champions League on the back of some difficult domestic form.

Draws with Manchester United and Aston Villa were followed off by a 3-2 loss to Manchester City at the weekend.

Chloe Kelly marked her return to Manchester City with a goal, but Iman Beney’s 88th-minute winner left the Gunners five points adrift Chelsea in the Women’s Super League title race.

They next face a Lyon side who have scored 14 goals in their last two domestic games alone.

Lyon produced a stunning 6-1 victory over a Paris Saint-Germain side who are also in this season’s Champions League. That was followed by an 8-1 victory over Lens where both Vicki Becho and Liana Joseph scored hat-tricks.

It is clear that Arsenal are not performing at the same levels as they did at the end of last season when they beat Barcelona to win the Champions League.

Alessia Russo was just one player who was very quiet during their opening half against Manchester City.

The Gunners beat Lyon 3-5 on aggregate in the semi-finals of last season’s Champions League.

However, they could be in for a tough night if they don’t lift their game against a Lyon side, who amongst the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona, are among the favourites to win this competition.
