Bronze left frustrated by “soft” decisions as Arsenal edge Chelsea in Champions League thriller

Chelsea’s Lucy Bronze was left questioning the officiating after two crucial “goals” were chalked off in their 3-1 Champions League quarter-final defeat to Arsenal.

In a classic Arsenal vs Chelsea encounter that lived up to its heavyweight billing, the Gunners took a significant step toward the semi-finals.

However, the 3-1 scoreline didn’t tell the whole story.

For the Blues, it was a case of ‘what might have been’ as they saw two efforts ruled out by the officials — decisions that Bronze feels were hard to swallow.

A “harsh” blow for the Blues

The most controversial moment came just before the break.

With Chelsea trailing 2-0, Veerle Buurman thought she had pulled one back with a towering header.

The celebrations were cut short, however, as the referee blew for a foul on Arsenal’s Laia Codina.

Speaking after the final whistle, a frustrated Bronze didn’t hold back on the decision.

“The first one, the header, I think it’s very soft,” Bronze admitted. “In a game of this magnitude, you want the play to flow. It felt like a harsh call, and at 2-1 going into half-time, it’s a completely different game.”

Arsenal vs Chelsea VAR drama and late frustration

The drama didn’t end there. Late in the second half, Kadeisha Buchanan bundled the ball home from a corner, only for the goal to be ruled out once again—this time for a foul on Arsenal keeper Anneke Borbe.

While VAR checked the incident, the original decision stood, leaving Sonia Bompastor’s side with a mountain to climb.

Despite a moment of absolute magic from Lauren James, who curled in a stunning solo effort to briefly give the visitors hope, goals from Stina Blackstenius, Chloe Kelly, and Alessia Russo ensured the night belonged to the North Londoners.

Looking ahead to the second leg

While the two-goal deficit is a blow, Bronze, a player who has seen it all in the Champions League, remains defiant.

Chelsea have a history of European comebacks, and with the second leg at Stamford Bridge just around the corner, the tie is far from over.

“We hit the post twice and had two goals ruled out,” Bronze noted. “The performance was there, we just didn’t get the rub of the green tonight. We know what we’re capable of at home, and we’ll be ready for the return leg.”

Arsenal may hold the advantage for now, but if this first leg is anything to go by, the next chapter of this Arsenal vs Chelsea rivalry is going to be just as explosive.
