The former professional has a wealth of experience having played at the top level in Scotland and having also represented her country.
As well as her work with Rangers, Amy will continue in her role as assistant to the Scotland U-15 side.
Her first game in charge of the Gers will be on Sunday 7 May when the Light Blues visit New Douglas Park to take on Hamilton. They currently sit fifth in the Scottish Women’s Premier League.
Gary Gibson, the club’s Community Manager appointed the new coach and commented to rangers.co.uk: “Amy has a very strong background in playing and coaching and is an A licence coach. It is perfect timing for her to come in as Head Coach to take the role.
“She has a really good reputation in terms of developing players and we have a young squad, so she will get the best out of them.
Speaking to RangersTV, McDonald said:
“One of the huge draws coming into to the club is that they have some fantastic youth players, not just at the first-team at the moment but all the way throughout the academy.
“I think the key for all the players just now is to work really hard to be able to develop and then hopefully more windows of opportunity will open for them.
“My first aim is containment of expectation because it is a really young squad. We will work with the team to set their goals and expectations, both as a squad and individually.
“I think if we can finish top five then that would be an achievement this season but it is really just a building block for next season and figuring out how far we can push.”
