Aitana Bonmati calls for changes to Spain’s Liga F as she praises the Women’s Super League

Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati has blasted the Liga F, insisting Spain’s top division has ignored the example of England’s Women’s Super League.

Bonmati spoke to the Spanish radio station Cadena SER, ahead of her country’s first leg of the Nations League final against Germany, on Friday night.

The Barcelona star has been critical of Spain’s domestic league in the past and still feels it is neglected in comparison to the WSL.

Aitana Bomati doesn’t know “who cares” about Liga F

Speaking to Cadena SER, Aitana Bonmati was critical about the situation in Liga F.

“Liga F is a little left in the hands of God, I don’t know who exactly cares,” the 27-year-old said. “Many of us have raised our voices and asked for changes, a more competitive league.

“We have the example of England, with a competitive and attractive league. We have it (WSL) next to us and we don’t want to look at it, I don’t get it. The league we have does not favour Spanish football and that is not good.”

It is not the first time she has made these comments. In April 2024, she said the WSL is “doing things so well” and is an “attractive league” for Spanish players.

At the same time, she also said there are “a lot of problems in Liga F”.

During the recent interview with Cadena SER, Bonmati said that she feels valued by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) after “everything that happened,” referring to the controversy surrounding Luis Rubiales.

Rubiales has refused to apologise to Jenni Hermoso for kissing her after the 2023 World Cup final. He was convicted of sexual assault for kissing her without consent, but he continues to maintain his innocence.

The former RFEF president recently had eggs thrown at him during his book launch by one of his own family members.

What changes does Bonmati want to the Spanish league?

Bonmati highlighted that the workload is more than what players face in the WSL. In the WSL, there are 12 teams with 22 matches per season, although that will increase to 26 with the league’s expansion next season.

In Spain, there are 16 teams with 30 matches per season in the Liga F. Bonmati was on the losing end with both Barcelona and Spain this season, in the Champions League final to Arsenal and the Euro 2025 final against England.

She said: “We asked for changes, for a reduction in the number of teams, because we believe that the league would then be more competitive and its level would increase. It would also be more attractive and more enjoyable to watch.

“Then there is the issue of the calendar. Players in Spain play the most matches. We always have worse conditions compared to other leagues.

“We [Spanish teams] are fighting for the Champions League and we are going into this competition with a bigger workload. And this also reflects on the national team. Then you go to the summer tournament, and the players from other countries come more rested.”
