Aitana Bonmati has joined Spain’s Women’s Euro 2025 squad after having treatment in hospital for viral meningitis.
The Barcelona midfielder was taken to a hospital in Madrid last Friday after missing training a day prior. This forced her to miss Spain’s 3-1 friendly win over Japan.
Bonmati, who has won the past two Ballon d’Ors, was discharged from hospital on Sunday after undergoing treatment for viral meningitis.
The 27-year-old has since flown out to Switzerland where she reunited with her Spain teammates on Monday night.
In pictures posted by the Spanish Football Federation, she was seen hugging her teammates and appeared to be in positive spirits after the recent medical concern.

Will Aitana Bonmati play against Portugal at Euro 2025?
The Euro 2025 fixture schedule sees Spain kick off their Women’s Euro 2025 campaign against Portugal on Thursday, July 3rd.
Spanish reports have confirmed that Bonmati won’t be ready in time for their Euro 2025 opener.
The viral meningitis that Bonmati was treated for is less serious than the rarer bacterial variant, as most cases improve on their own.
However, as per the NHS, this can usually take place within seven to 10 days. Bonmati was taken to hospital just six days before Spain face Portugal, so the clash on Thursday is likely to be too soon for the midfielder.
No official update has been given by Spain on when Bonmati might be ready to feature.
The reigning World Cup winners will hope to have her back in the fold for the second group game against Belgium on Monday, July 7th.
Spain’s final Group B game will come against Italy on Friday, July 11th.
What is viral meningitis?
Meningitis is an infection of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord.
While viral meningitis can typically resolves on its own, bacterial meningitis is a more serious infection that requires antibiotic treatment.
Bonmati, after having treatment for viral meningitis, wrote on social media: “Thanks to everyone for the messages I’ve received and to those who have helped me these past few days.
“Fortunately, everything is going well. I hope to be back soon.”
Spain are favourites for Euro 2025
Spain are undoubtedly the favourites to win Women’s Euro 2025 thanks to their squad packed with world-class talent.
The nation won their first World Cup in 2023, and followed that off by winning the Nations League in 2024.
According to the best betting sites in the UK, Spain are 2/1 favourites to win the tournament. The nearest challengers are expected to be England, at 3/1, who they beat in the final of the World Cup.
