Named The Times and Sunday Times Sports University of the Year 2015-2016, the University of Exeter is considered a natural home for talented athletes and those with a passion for football.
With some of the best training, teaching, and playing facilities in the country, combined with a huge range of modules and study abroad choices, the University of Exeter’s Sport and Health Sciences programmes allow students to specialise in their particular area of interest.
The historic St Luke’s Campus provides a friendly and supportive setting and environment, whilst its extensive teaching and research facilities—described by one student as “top of the range and suiting everyone’s needs”—include purpose-built laboratories for sport and exercise physiology, sports biomechanics, health and performance psychology research.
All programmes are enhanced by the research of academic staff who collaborate with industry and professional athletes to advance knowledge within this broad discipline. Many programmes include interdisciplinary modules and the option to study abroad. The University also has a sports scholarship programme that provides financial and logistical support to talented athletes.
Sports and Health scientists are not limited to playing only one sport. With over fifty Athletic Union clubs available to join on either a competitive or friendly basis, there’s plenty of opportunity to try something new. That said, football is an enduring favourite and the University has recently formed an exciting partnership with Yeovil Town Ladies in order to support the growth of women’s and girls’ football in the region.
The University’s Women’s Football Club has also recently welcomed the involvement of the Devon FA, who will enhance club training and provide further opportunities to play. This season, the club has been building on a recent double promotion, with the 1st team competing in the impressive Western 1A league. The 2nd team and Sunday league side have also had very successful seasons, putting the club in a great position going forward.
Outside of regular games and training sessions, the club also hosts weekly social events that all are welcome to attend, providing an active social life alongside academic and sporting pursuits.
Chloe Bland, Women’s Football Club Captain, says, “Sport and Health Sciences offers a large range of modules, providing the opportunity for a variety of career prospects. It’s an incredibly fun and active course with labs involving exercise participation and most members joining one or more Athletic Union Clubs”.
Yeovil Town Ladies player Georgia Mann concurs, adding: “The extensive research undertaken by lecturers and students was of great interest to me and I knew that if I were to go to a Russell Group university, it would be this one. The University of Exeter is, without a doubt, the best university in the South West, if not the best sports university in England.”
