Chelsea beat Paris Saint Germain 1-0 away from home in their opening UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage game.

Emma Hayes’ side struck before the half-hour mark, as Erin Cuthbert returned a clearance from her corner back into the six-yard box and Millie Bright volleyed it home at the far post. The visitors might have increased their lead but both Sam Kerr and Pernille Harder had goal-bound efforts blocked.

The other Group A match on Thursday saw Vllaznia – the first Albanian side to reach this stage – beaten 2-0 at home by Real Madrid. The goals came in the second half from Esther Gozalez and an Olga Carmona penalty, with Madrid also hitting the woodwork four times.

Roma edged Slavia Prague 1-0 in Group B, Valentina Giacinti getting the goal just after the hour mark, while Marjolen Wafula was denied a late leveller by the crossbar.

Wolfsburg were 4-0 winers over St. Pölten in the same group, Ewa Pajor bagging a brace in the first quarter of an hour, Lena Lattwein and Jill Roord adding second-half goals.
