Crewe Alexandra report on a successful season that has brought trophies for both 1st team and Development squad.
Crewe Alexandra are enjoying a successful season under the leadership of Club Head Coach Nick Pearce and Assistant Ian Wood. Supported by Football Development Manager, Tony Heron, the team have gone from strength to strength ever since Pearce set out his vision for the club’s Ladies section in 2012 when he arrived at the club.
The Alex Ladies adopts the philosophy of home grown player development that has been such a successful blueprint for the parent club. The club now hosts 3 age groups they all adopt the same playing philosophy at first team, U-21 and U-18 level.
The ladies’ first team recently became champions of Cheshire, beating Tranmere Rovers in the Cheshire FA County Cup Final at Warrington Town FC. The victory was well deserved as Crewe outworked and outplayed their Wirral opponents who play a league higher than the Alex.
Three first half goals, comprising of a brace from striker Katy Connell and a stunning strike from Claire O’Reilly put the Alex into a commanding lead. Tranmere managed to pull two goals back, one before half time and a second just past the hour mark to make the score line more respectable but Crewe were determined and never in any danger of relinquishing their lead.
Nick Pearce said of the cup win; “It was a magnificent team effort to outperform a more experienced team from a higher league. We were on our game from the first minute to the last minute and it was a wonderful showcase for female football in South Cheshire”.
Several homegrown players were included in the Cup Final Squad as the Alex lifted the cup for only the second time in their history.
Crewe Alexandra’s Development squad, managed by John Evans, won the club’s second trophy of the week by beating Altrincham after extra-time to be awarded the Cheshire East Girls & Women’s Challenge Cup.
Next season the club will be developing its age groups further with the introduction of an U-16 team. For trial dates, please check out the website at www.calfc.co.uk
