South Africa win Women’s AFCON trophy for first time

Five time runners-up South Africa beat Morocco 2-1 to win the Total Energies Women’s African Cup of Nations for the first time.

Banyana Banyana had needed a stoppage-time penalty in the semis to edge out Zambia, tournament hosts Morocco going through on penalties against Nigeria.

Hildah Magaia’s second-half brace settled the final, although Tottenham’s Rosella Ayane pulled one back.

Zambia finished third at WAFCON 2022, an own-goal giving them victory against Nigeria.

The finalists plus Nigeria and Zambia had already qualified for the World Cup, with Cameroon and Senegal going into the intercontinental play-offs after wins over Botswana and Tunisia respectively in the repechage.
