Giddings Looks To Extend Royals' Run

Reading captain, Georgie Giddings, has challenged the Royals to continue their good run of form in FA Women’s Super League 2 against Yeovil Town as they look to keep their promotion hopes alive.

Saturday’s 4-0 win against second-placed Doncaster Rovers Belles stretched the Royals’ unbeaten run in the league to seven games.

With eight games remaining, Reading lie third, nine points behind leaders Sunderland with a game in hand, but face a tough test away at Yeovil who are a point behind in fourth.

The two sides met on the opening day of the season with Reading triumphing 3-0 and Giddings hopes that result may give them a psychological edge.

“We beat them in our first league game of the season so that gives us quite a bit of confidence and we’re on a good run at the moment so hopefully we can take that with us,” Giddings said.

“But we can’t take anything for granted because the league is so open at the moment and there have been a lot of surprising results everywhere.

“I think it’s going to be a very tough game, particularly as it’s at their place. A lot of teams have started to find them difficult to play against as the season’s gone on so we know we will be in for a tough battle.

“I think this will be a very different game from the first one. They’ve found their feet and are starting to realise what they’re capable of. They’ve got good players and a lot of depth in their squad from what I’ve seen.”

Yeovil are indeed in fine form, winning their three games since Jamie Sherwood replaced Sarah Lawler as manager, with Sarah Wiltshire scoring a hat-trick in their 6-0 win against Oxford at the weekend.

But captain Rachael Edwards admits they will have to be at their best to quell the attacking threats of Reading, particularly England international Fran Kirby who has scored two hat-tricks in her last three games.

“There’s just a great buzz around the place and we all believe 100 per cent in what everyone’s trying to do, and that’ll carry us to the end of the season,” she said.

“All respect to Fran, she’s a fantastic player, a real talent and she will be a handful. In our first game of the season we played away to Reading and lost, and I think she grabbed a goal so we’ll plan for her.

“But Reading have a really lethal attacking group, they’ve got two or three others that can score goals – so we’ll be on our guard. As a whole we haven’t leaked too many goals this season and with a home crowd, we want to show what we can do.”

Tickets for this encounter on Thursday 4th September can be purchased by clicking here or paying cash on the day, costing £4.00 adults / £2.50 concessions. The turnstiles open at 6.15pm and the games kicks off at 7.45pm.
