Workington Win Cumberland Cup For First Time

The result was something of a surprise, as the teams had met only two days previously in a North West League Division 1 North with mid-table Carlisle 3-0 victors over the Reds, who are not yet sure of avoiding a bottom-two finish.

But Friday’s fixture at Carlisle City FC saw Workington take the lead through Hayley Bracken after 15 minutes, following some Carlisle United pressure.

Reds’ keeper Laura Miller was called upon to make several saves before half time, denying Sharina Robinson and keeping out a free kick from Stacey Harkness, then denying Robinson again with an effort from a corner.

Megan Batey then fired over the bar for Workington and Holly Redmond went on a jinking run before the ball was cleared for a Reds’ corner.

Batey caught the Carlisle keeper off her line but was unable to find the target with her lob.

A Robinson thunderbolt was blocked by two Workington players and although United kept putting the pressure on in the last few minutes, they could not find an equaliser.
