Morgan makes her first move to Europe on a six-month loan deal from NWSL newcomers Orlando Pride and comes with massive experience, totalling 120 caps and 73 goals for the USA.
She has an option of an additional year with the reigning European champions but for now the focus is recovering from their league loss to rivals Paris Saint-Germain and then the resumption of the UWCL in the spring.
Last weekend’s 1-0 defeat to PSG was the first time that Lyon had been beaten since their UWCL reverse to the same opponents in 2014. But having won all the last ten French titles, Lyon won’t be giving up this season’s trophy in a hurry and this is highlighted by the acquisition of Morgan – 2015’s best-paid female footballer.
While domestic matters get underway again next month, it’s the last week in March before Lyon’s Champions League ties with VfL Wolfsburg.
Morgan, who was won the World Cup and an Olympic gold medal, said in a blog post at The Players’ Tribune: “I’m not looking to coast. Just going through the motions isn’t something I’ll ever be comfortable with. I want to be the best player in the United States, the best player in the world so I’ve decided to take a huge risk and bet on myself.”
