Manchester United have released the news that the club is delighted to confirm the signing of Lotta Ökvist to the women’s team.
The 22-year-old defender spent the 2018/19 season with Swedish side Hammarby IF FF, having previously had two spells with Piteå IF and Umeå IK and has also represented Sweden at all youth levels from under-17, upwards. She is currently an under-23 level international.
Ökvist was released by Orlando Pride (in the NWSL) in July 2018 after joining in March of that year but did not make an official appearance for the side. (Her route to Orlando was via Boston Breakers who folded shortly after she signed with them and then via the draft to Houston Dash and to the Pride in a trade.) This will be a fantastic opportunity for her to develop her game in the WSL.
Lotta Ökvist said:
“I’m excited to be joining Manchester United, it’s a special club and I can’t wait for the opportunity to develop as a player here. I’m confident in my ability and I hope to contribute a lot to the team during this first season in one of the most competitive leagues.”
“One of the main reasons for me choosing to come to United was to get to work under Casey Stoney; I think she is a fantastic coach and also a person who cares about her players. I really can’t wait to get started.”
Manager Casey Stoney on her latest recruit:
“Lotta is a talented Swedish under-23 international with huge potential and great character. She will add good balance and depth to our squad, and as a left-back she has great attacking qualities that will fit well with the way we like to play; we’re really happy to have her on board with us.”
