Hampton & Richmond Borough recorded something of a rugby scoreline in Sunday’s win over Bracknell Town in the SSE Women’s FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round, so we asked manager Leah Ambridge all about it.
SK: What was the feeling ahead of the FA Cup tie?
LA: Lot’s of excitement throughout the club, for many in the squad this was the first time they had participated in the FA Cup competition and with all the buzz around the recent final, it definetely felt a special occasion.
SK: What was the most amazing, frustrating or just plain daft moment of the match?
LA: With some excellent goals being scored by both teams, it was a very entertaining game for the spectators to watch and a great showcase for encouraging regular support. Some of our goals particularly were fantastic buildup work and finishing, showing all the training is paying off
SK: Were there many changes of the lead?
LA: Bracknell took the lead initially but by half time we had taken back control with the score standing at 3-1. Second half kicked off and we went ahead further 4-1, 4-2, 5-2, 5-3, 6-3, 6-4, 7-4, 8-4, 8-5 and then on until 11-5 final score.
SK: Did you start thinking this scoreline is just nuts?
LA: As we started to edge away in the second half, I think we could of had even more if it wasn’t for some brave saves from the keeper and tired legs starting to kick in.
SK: You’re giving good goal value for your fans, 5-4 in the one league fixture too.
LA: Thankfully we have continued were we left off from last season, with goals coming form all different areas of the team and with some great additions to the squad this will hopefully continue. It does help to have players like Katie Foster and Louise Clark – who bagged over 50 goals between them last season – hitting form early, Kate hit 5 on Sunday alone.
Greater London League Division 1 Hampton’s reward for their victory is a trip to another Southern League Premier Division opponent, Oxford City, in the 2nd Qualifying Round on Sunday September 20th.
