#WU17EURO: Young Lionesses agonisingly miss out on semi-finals

Despite defeating the Dutch by two goals to nil, England fell one goal short of making the last four of the UEFA Women’s U-17 Championship finals in Bulgaria.

Gemma Grainger’s side finished level on points with both Germany and the Netherlands but behind those two on the head-to-head records.

Katie Robinson and Keri Matthews both scored against the Netherlands in a seven-minute spell at the start of the second half but it was the Dutch who progressed to meet holders Spain on Tuesday.

Germany went through as group winners with a 3-1 victory over Austria. Carlotta Wamser bagged a brace, Sophie Weidauer their other goal, while substitute Christibe Edlinger got a late consolation.

Portugal stand between the Germans and a place in the final, despite being hit for six by neighbours Spain. Salma Paralluelo netted three times, Silvia Lloris a double and one from Maria Diaz Gutierrez.

Denmark’s 2-0 result against Bulgaria was not enough for them to go through, goals by Cornelia Kramer and sub Freja Storm turning out to be all in vain.

Tuesday’s semis kick off at 11am and 3.30pm (UK time) and are live on uefa.tv.
