Stone Dominoes’ Penalty Progress

Julia Kendrick of Stone Dominoes told us about the SSE Women’s FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round progress on penalties over fellow West Midlands Division 1 North side Wyrley.

SK: Tell us a little of your playing/coaching career
JK: I started playing 15 years ago at Stafford Rangers FC when I was 14, I moved to Newcastle Ladies two years ago and we merged to become Stone Dominoes FC one year ago. I usually play centre midfield, however the FA Cup game I played as a striker.

SK: How did you feel about winning at Wyrley?
JK: We were up for the game but knew it would be tough. They are a good team but we dug deep and played some excellent football at times. The game was so close either team could have won, so coming away as winners was brilliant. Even better to have my name on the scoresheet too. Talking to the girls since the game, they are all aching but buzzing after the win.

SK: How did the scoring go and what were the goals like?
JK: We took the lead just before half time through a goalmouth scramble that I managed to slot into the goal. Wyrley scored to equalise on about 10 minutes into the second half, we then got one back through Hannah Perry’s header from a corner. Wyrley then equalised again and could have taken the win if they had scored a penalty in the last few minutes or normal time! The game was really equal between both teams.

SK: Were there any volunteers for the penalties and who was best?
JK: Yes, all five penalty takers volunteered. Lydia Bennion, Kerry McCourt and Nat Price all had great shots into the bottom corner. Our goalkeeper Charlotte Perry must get most of the credit though, as she saved a few

SK: What do you think to the draw?
JK: We have pulled out Kettering Town at our home. This will definitely be a test for us, however it’s not impossible. We have a good squad and great home support, which will help us a lot.

Stone Dominoes: (Left to right – from the back) Nat Price, Lisa Elliot, Charlotte Perry, Hannah Perry, Becky Arnold, Hayley Mason, Mollie Prime, Siobhan Haynes, Amy Thompson, Laura Baskerville, Lauren Ward, Kerr McCourt, Simone Kelsall, Meaford Nurseries Sponsor Mrs Cheadle, Bethan Woodings, Julia Kendrick, Tammi Bennett)

SK: Has your season begun well?
JK: Our season has started really well. After being promoted last season, we played our first league game and won 5-1, the first round of the FA Cup 5-1 also and now a win against Wryley and into the 3rd Round.

SK: What are your expectations for this campaign?
JK: Just get as far as we can, we are under no pressure as there are some great teams involved, so we are very much the underdogs.
