FA WPL Chairperson Carol West was delighted with Sunday’s Charity Trophy success (plus highlights!)
The FA Women’s Premier League Charity Trophy 2016 was a big success, says delighted chairman Carol West following Sunday’s 5-2 win for WPL champions Brighton against a star-studded ex-England All-Stars team at Leamington FC.
The match was played to raise funds for the Football Association’s charity partner Breast Cancer Care and West told She Kicks: “It was a great day that helped us raise a significant amount of money for the charity.
“It was also an opportunity for our Premier League champions to play against some of the legends of English women’s football – I’ve spoken to some of the Brighton players and they were really made up about the day.
“It was also lovely to see some of the icons of the game in action again. The women’s game has come on so much in recent years, but while we look forward to the future it’s also important that we pay due respect to the past.”

The ex-England team included Marieanne Spacey, just awarded the MBE, Rachels Brown and Unitt – both new inductees into the FA’s Football Hall of Fame – and a central defensive pairing of recently retired Lindsay Johnson and long time retiree Clare Taylor – at 51 the oldest involved but named Player of the Match.
Jo Broadhurst and Aran Embleton were the ex-England scorers while there were also notable contributions from Kirsty Pealling, Sammy Britton, Amanda Barr, Justine Lorton, Michelle Hickmott, Sian Williams and Ellen Maggs.
West added: “Like the Brighton girls, the ex-England players were buzzing about the day and several of them said to me, ‘put me down to play in next year’s match!’ I’ll certainly do that, and I look forward to our Charity Trophy 2017.”
