Irish U-17s Tie With Wales

Northern Ireland battled back from a goal down to earn a draw in a hard-fought friendly at Ystrad Mynach.

Wales made six changes to the side that started two days previously, while Meesha Dudley-Jones captained Jayne Ludlow’s side.

Another of those changes – Lucy Attwood – scored the opening goal in spectacular fashion as she beat the offside trap before firing a left-foot half volley past Lauren Perry in the visitors’ goal.

Prior to that, Northern Ireland came close when Casey Howe saw her low shot find the side netting, while Grace Horrell could have doubled the home side’s lead just before the break but her shot flew over the bar.

Shortly after the restart, Wales should have doubled their lead as a corner from the right was flicked on by Lucy Attwood but Charlie Taylor couldn’t convert from inside the six-yard box.

And just three minutes later, Northern Ireland were level as Emily Wilson capitalised on a loose ball before curling home a fine effort from 25 yards.

The visitors had been much improved after the break and substitute Sadie Craig almost won it soon after as her shot found the side netting.

But the result means it was a still a positive week for the Wales U-17 squad following a 2-1 victory over Northern Ireland just two days previously.
