The FA Women’s Football Board has today confirmed that Everton have been successful in their application to take the vacant FA WSL 1 slot for the 2017/18 season, following the recent liquidation of Notts County.
Aaron Little, General Manager, told evertonfc.com that plans are already underway to ensure Everton are ready ahead of the season kicking off in September.
“We knew it was a possibility that we could be promoted but to have it confirmed is welcome news. For the past number of weeks we have been planning for both scenarios in terms of player recruitment and retention.
“Now that we know we will be competing in the top division once again we can really begin to work hard towards ensuring we are here to stay. This is something I am extremely confident of doing.
“We are under no illusions how tough it will be. The standard of football within the women’s game is increasing year on year but we are ready to make our mark.”
One other club applied, which was Doncaster Rovers Belles, who said in a statement:
‘Doncaster and are naturally disappointed not to have been promoted by way of application, but will now concentrate of winning promotion through the league, as we have done in the past.
We now have 7 days to consider whether we appeal and understand that we will be receiving a letter of explanation some time later today, whereupon the club’s legal team will review the same and recommend a course of action.’
The teams playing in the FA WSL 1 for the 2017/18 season will be ratified at the AGM on Wednesday 28 June 2017.
