Northern Ireland Lose UEFA U-17 qualifier to Portugal

Northern Ireland’s first group game in the UEFA U-17 Championship qualifiers ended in a narrow 2-1 defeat to mini-tournament hosts Portugal.

Playing at the Complexo Desportivo da Tocha, Telma Encarnação put the Portuguese ahead just 2 minutes into the game.

There was an early goal in the second half too, as Leah McEvoy equalised.

However, Encarnação got her second on 54 minutes, which proved enough to secure the win.

The Irish next face Austria on Thursday and they today thrashed Georgia, yielding 13 goals from a massive total of 56 shots.

Celina Degen featured with five goals and Maria Plattner hit a hat-trick.
