Jen Beattie insists Tottenham can challenge for Champions League spots

Tottenham have made an excellent start to the season

Former Arsenal star Jen Beattie believes Tottenham are in the race for the Champions League qualification spots.

Spurs are fourth in the Women’s Super League following their narrow 1-0 win over Leicester City.

Tottenham are behind Arsenal on goal difference, with the top three in the WSL qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Head coach Martin Ho has downplayed talk of qualifying for next season’s Champions League. However, former Arsenal star Beattie believes that Tottenham will internally fancy their chances.

What did Jen Beattie say about Tottenham’s Champions League chances?

Speaking on BBC Women’s Football Weekly, Beattie was asked about whether Tottenham were in the race for the Champions League spots.

Beattie said that Ho is protecting his side by downplaying their chances to the media.

She said: “Race for the Champions League spots, I mean, yeah, why not? I respect what he’s saying, he doesn’t want to put pressure on his players.

“What you say internally and what you say externally to the media can be two different things. I think this might be one of them.

“I think internally they know the quality that they have and they know they can compete with anyone in the league now. They have made good signings, they are improving, the investment seems to be there and I think he (Ho) has been spot on with his recruitment.

“I get it, he’s downplaying it for a reason. He’s very happy with where his team are at but he knows they can creep into those top three spots because why not with the way they are playing and the people they are bringing in.”

Who have Tottenham signed this window?

Tottenham have been the busiest out of any WSL side during the January transfer window, bringing in five players.

Signe Gaupset was the first Tottenham signing, and she delivered a Player of the Match performance on her debut against Leicester.

Spurs have since signed Hannah Wijk and Matilda Nilden from BK Hacken, Julie Blakstad from Hammarby and Maika Hamano on loan from Chelsea.

Speaking on BBC Women’s Football Weekly, Ellen White praised Tottenham’s recruitment.

She said: “They have recruited smartly. I am excited to see Julie Blakstad.

“It is smart recruitment, it gives them more depth so if he needs to change or if there are injuries, he will fully back his squad.
