Bayern Munich star Lea Schuller leaves pitch in tears amid links with Manchester United

Lea Schuller Bayern Munich Manchester United

Bayern Munich star Lea Schuller left the pitch in tears after their 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen, amid speculation that she could join Manchester United in the January transfer window.

Has Lea Schuller played her final game for Bayern Munich?

Multiple reports have suggested that Lea Schuller could join Manchester United in the January transfer window.

Schuller was unable to play in Bayern Munich’s 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen on Monday night, due to what was described as an ‘illness’.

However, she was still in attendance and was in the stands alongside the injured Lena Oberdorf.

After the final whistle, she went onto the pitch and headed in the direction of the travelling Bayern Munich fans.

She applauded the Bayern Munich supporters and was tearful as she headed off the pitch, in what appeared to be a farewell to the club’s supporters.

Schuller, who joined Bayern Munich in 2020 from SGS Essen, also hugged some of her Bayern Munich teammates.

The 28-year-old, who has 82 caps for Germany, has scored 102 goals in 177 appearances for the German giants.

Manchester United keen to sign Schuller and Hannah Lundkvist

It first emerged last week that Manchester United were keen to sign two players during the January window.

German forward Schuller and Swedish centre-back Hanna Lundkvist are both widely expected to make the move to the WSL team.

Lundkvist, 23, is a Swedish international who is now a free agent, after her contract at NWSL side San Diego Wave expired.

United would have to pay a fee for Schuller, who is out of contract next summer.

Red Devils boss Skinner said Manchester United were close to two signings earlier this month.

He said: “We are already hopefully close to a couple of players, which I think will be exciting.

“We need to be creative within the parameters but what I’d say is we need to add to the group. I must stress that it is not because of the quality of my players; it’s just the depth to be able to continue the experience, especially with the level of competition.

“We’ve got Champions League, a tough game against Spurs, Champions League again and then a quarter-final. The level of competition is there.”

Skinner had already confirmed they were looking for a new midfielder after learning the news of Celin Bizet’s pregnancy last month.
