Is it time for Sam Kerr to make her return to the Chelsea lineup?

Sam Kerr is yet to start a WSL game for Chelsea this season, but it may be time for the Blues to put her back in the lineup as they chase down Manchester City.

Kerr had been out of action for over a year after suffering a devastating injury, but she finally made her return to football in September.

Why Sam Kerr should start for Chelsea

Having been back with her club for over a month now, Sam Kerr has earned a place in the starting lineup.

The Matildas star has featured in nine league games so far this season with all of her appearances coming off the bench.

Usually Sonia Bompastor introduces Kerr to the action with around half an hour left to play, but with the Blues chasing games of late her star forward has been introduced earlier and earlier.

Over the weekend Kerr was brought on at half time and her impact against Brighton was noticeable.

The Australian superstar picked up an assist off the bench – her third goal contribution of the year in the WSL.

Kerr has scored twice already this season and now she is back to full fitness it is surely time for Bompastor to return her star to the starting XI.

Kerr will also be pushing to get back into the Australia team in 2026 after being left on the bench for the first time in three years during the last international break.

Aggie Beever-Jones faltering

Of course if Kerr is to be reintroduced to the Chelsea lineup someone would have to be sacrificed.

The obvious answer to that question would be Aggie Beever-Jones, who has faltered lately after a fast start to her campaign.

There was no stopping the 22-year-old at the beginning of this season as she netted in her first four games – setting a new club record for the Blues.

However since her fast start the striker has struggled in front of goal and there is now a chance that Kerr can come back into the Chelsea setup.

It would be hard for Chelsea to drop their ‘backup’ striker despite her poor recent run of form but bringing Sam Kerr back into the mix may be a calculated risk that the team needs to take.

Chelsea in shock title race

At the beginning of the season almost everyone would have thought Chelsea would walk the league for a sixth consecutive title.

Their campaign hasn’t gone to plan though and after dropping points in three consecutive games, Manchester City are now in the driving seat.

There is a six point gap between Chelsea and City as they enter the winter break.

Sonia Bompastor’s team can definitely come back after Christmas to storm to another league title, and Sam Kerr might just be the key to getting her side back on track.
