Manchester United boss Marc Skinner believes Anna Sandberg is “going to be one of the best in the world” after her standout display against West Ham.

United’s 2-1 win over West Ham in the Women’s Super League showcased another commanding performance from Anna Sandberg, who continues to grow into one of the team’s most important players.

After the final whistle, the Sweden international received the Player of the Match trophy, recognition for her relentless work up and down the left side and the control she brought to United’s play.

Sandberg influenced the match in both directions. She showed sharp defensive reading to limit West Ham’s attempts in open play and also delivered the moment that sparked United’s breakthrough.

Her clever body movement drew her marker out of position before she sent in a pinpoint cross for Elisabeth Terland to score the opener.

What did Marc Skinner say about Anna Sandberg?

Marc Skinner praised Manchester United full-back Anna Sandberg for her willingness to learn and her ability to adapt inside a single game.

“She’s playing a really good forward in [Shekiera] Martinez and I felt that she got tight too tight to her once, and then she learned from that straightaway… and just her maturity,” he reflected.

He then gave a bold assessment, stating: “The ability to play quickly the way that she does, honestly, I think she’s going to be one of the very best in the world. We’re happy the recruitment and that we made a decision early on Anna.”

His comments reveal how highly she is regarded within the club. United always viewed her as a long-term investment and accepted that she would need time to adapt to the speed and physicality of English football. Last season she was not a regular starter, spending long spells adjusting to her new surroundings.

Sandberg has secured the left back position with performances marked by control, composure and hard running.

Skinner acknowledged her determination to earn that role. “We waited a year, where she was frustrated because she wants to play, but now we’re starting to see the real Anna,” he said.

“I think she’s an incredible footballer, but more importantly, a really strong human, with the tragedy of the mother [passing away] in the summer. For her to come the way that she has is a testament to her and her family.”

What is next for Manchester United?

Manchester United are now just one point behind Chelsea, after Everton’s historic win over the Blues at the weekend.

However, United are still seven points off rivals Manchester City, who lead the standings.

Next up for the Red Devils, is a tricky Champions League clash against Lyon on Wednesday night. United are then back in WSL action against Tottenham at the weekend.
