Jenni Hermoso was visibly emotional after completing a fairytale comeback with Spain, who beat Germany 3-0 on Tuesday night to win the Women’s Nations League.

It has been a turbulent two years for Hermoso within the national setup since Spain lifted the Women’s World Cup in 2023.

Spain’s all-time leading scorer was caught up in the Luis Rubiales scandal after the former president of the Spanish Football Federation kissed her after the World Cup final.

Hermoso was then sidelined under previous Spain head coach Montse Tome, before she was recalled following the appointment of Sonia Bermudez.

Spain win the Women’s Nations League

Jenni Hermoso was a late substitute for Spain as they beat Germany 3-0 in the second leg of their Nations League final.

Spain were without Aitana Bonmati, who will miss five months after undergoing surgery on a broken leg.

However, Spain still cruised to a 3-0 victory thanks to two goals from Claudia Pina and one from Vicky Lopez.

The victory meant Spain retained the trophy they first won last year, and ended 2025 on a high, following their Euro 2025 final loss to England.

Hermoso played no part in Euro 2025, but was “tremendously happy” to be part of the Spain squad to win the Nations League.

What did Jenni Hermoso say after Spain’s victory?

After the final whistle, Hermoso spoke of the difficult work to get back into the Spain squad.

A visibly emotional Hermoso said: “It has cost a lot. I am not going to lie to you. It has been many months of work.

“Sometimes everything has its reward. I’m tremendously happy because with this group, this team, I can continue doing what I like.”

In another interview, she said: “My happy face says it all. The happiness of returning, being in my city, because every time I talk about Madrid my eyes get teary.”

She added that she was “very proud” to wear the Spain shirt and that the win showed they are the “best team in the world”.

Hermoso returns after two turbulent years with Spain

Hermoso is one of Spain’s all-time greatest player but has endured a difficult two years with the national team.

Rubiales kissed Hermoso on the lips after Spain’s 2023 World Cup final victory. The Spain star insisted she did not give consent for the kiss, but Rubiales has continued to pledge his innocence and said he won’t apologise to Hermoso.

Rubiales though was fined 10,000 euros (£8,834) as Spain’s High Court found him guilty of sexual assault. He was acquitted of coercion for allegedly trying to pressure Hermoso into saying the kiss was consensual in public.

The former Spanish Football Federation president was recently egged by his uncle at his own book launch.

Hermoso was later absent from the Spain team for one year after she was left out of the squad by Tome.

The Spain star hit out at Tome after the former head coach said she had a ‘clear conscience’ regards to her selection for the Euro 2025 squad, which Hermoso was left out of.

However, Hermoso returned to the Spain squad in October after the appointment of Bermudez.
