Women’s Super League (WSL) clubs Aston Villa, Brighton, and West Ham are in the race to sign Nigerian forward Joy Omewa from Fortuna Hjorring.

Soccerdonna reports that the three WSL clubs are keen to sign Omewa during the January transfer window.

The 22-year-old has been in explosive form in Denmark this season, scoring 14 goals in her last 14 games.

Who is Joy Omewa?

Nigerian striker Joy Omewa is one of the top young African players in women’s football.

Her career began in her home country with Confluence Queens, before joining Danish side B.93 in April 2021. Just seven months later, she was transferred to Fortuna Hjorring, where she has achieved great success.

She took huge strides during the 2024-25 season, scoring 25 goals to help her side win a domestic and cup double.

Omewa was named as the Player of the Season and finished the A-Liga (then known as the Kvindeliga) as the top scorer.

This season, she has already scored 12 goals in 13 appearances, with Fortuna Hjorring currently second in the league behind HB Koge.

She also netted three goals in the Women’s Champions League before being eliminated by St. Polten. Fortuna were demoted to the new UEFA Women’s Europa Cup, where Omewa netted four goals in four games, before they were eliminated from that competition.

Her prolific goalscoring would be a huge asset to Aston Villa, Brighton and West Ham.

Why are Aston Villa, Brighton and West Ham interested in signing Omewa?

There are strong reasons as to why each of the three WSL clubs would be interested in signing Omewa during the January transfer window.

Aston Villa, along with Arsenal, have drawn the most games in the WSL this season, with four. Natalia Arroyo’s side are struggling to finish their chances this season with nine goals and the fourth-most big chances missed with 15.

Brighton are short up top after Michelle Agyemang was ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury.

West Ham have scored just six goals in nine WSL games this season. The Hammers are second from bottom with just four points on the board, after only picking up their first win of the season last week against Everton.

Omewa is the type of signing that could get all three sides firing during the second-half of the campaign.

However, the jump from the A-Liga to the WSL is a big one, so Omewa could take time to settle if she does make a move to England.

Which other players could be on the move in January?

Tottenham completed the first signing of the January transfer window after announcing Signe Gaupset would arrive from SK Brann on January 1st.

The deal was announced on Friday night, after reports that the clubs had agreed a deal in principle two weeks ago.

Soccerdonna have reported that American Olivia Garcia, who plays for HB Koge, has also attracted interest from elsewhere in Europe.

Arsenal have been linked with Swedish international Smilia Holmberg, who missed a penalty against England at Euro 2025.

There are also big discussions over Washington Spirit star Trinity Rodman, who is out of contract next month.

WSL clubs are believed to be in the race for Rodman, and there is also interest from Gainbridge Super League side DC Power.
