Leicester City striker Jutta Rantala is set to undergo knee surgery after suffering a meniscus injury during their 4-1 defeat to Brighton.

It is a blow for the 26-year-old who was kept out for the majority of last season after an injury to her opposite knee.

A statement on Leicester’s website read: “We can confirm that striker Jutta Rantala will unfortunately be sidelined for an extended period after suffering a meniscus injury in Sunday’s game at Brighton.”

It is the latest in a line of serious knee injuries in the WSL, which have affected players including England striker Michelle Agyemang.

How did Leicester striker Jutta Rantala suffer her latest knee injury?

Leicester City striker Jutta Rantala suffered the injury during the second half of their 4-1 defeat to Brighton.

The Finnish forward jumped a tackle and, on landing, appeared to get her studs caught in the turf.

Her knee then appeared to twist, and she fell down to the pitch before quickly receiving on-field treatment.

She was helped onto her feet and looked very upset as she headed off down the tunnel.

Rantala, who made just three appearances last season due to her previous knee injury, returned to action with Finland at Euro 2025. She made substitute appearances in their win over Iceland, defeat to Norway and draw with Switzerland.

Rantala’s Leicester City career

Rantala joined Leicester in the summer of 2023 and had an impressive first season at the King Power Stadium.

The Finnish forward scored six goals in her debut WSL campaign and was named as the club’s Player of the Season.

However, her second year at the club ended after just three appearances, after she suffered a knee injury in October 2024.

Rantala has been eased back into action this season, more often than not coming off the bench for the Foxes.

She scored a goal and provided two assists on her return to the starting XI against Ipswich in the Women’s League Cup in September.

Rantala also scored in the 1-0 victory over the London City Lionesses in October, and provided an assist against Brighton before she came off with her injury.

What’s next for Leicester City?

The Foxes face Crystal Palace in the Women’s League Cup on Sunday at 3pm.

Rick Passmoor’s side needs just one point to finish top of Group C and enter the hat for Tuesday’s Women’s League Cup draw.

The Foxes are not in WSL action until December 7th, when they play league leaders Manchester City at the King Power Stadium.
