Wendie Renard makes history in Champions League with 100th win

Lyon defender Wendie Renard reached a new milestone in the Champions League this week with her 100th win in the competition.

Wendie Renard: Champions League history maker

During Lyon’s win against Wolfsburg this week, Wendie Renard made history.

The club captain became the first player in Champions League history to record 100 wins in the competition.

Most women’s Champions League wins

  1. Wendie Renard – 100 (Lyon)
  2. Eugenie Le Sommer – 82 (Toluca)
  3. Alexandra Popp – 70 (Wolfsburg)
  4. Saki Kumagi – 68 (London City Lionesses)
  5. Caroline Graham Hansen – 66 (Barcelona)

No other player is even close to Renard’s record and with former teammate Eugenie Le Sommer now playing for Toluca, the defender is only extending her record.

During her time with Lyon, Renard has won the Champions League seven times.

The most decorated player in competition history has a strong shot of adding an eighth title to her trophy cabinet this year, as Lyon remain perfect in Europe to start the season.

Renard was a huge miss for France at the Euros in summer as she wasn’t selected for the squad.

The former national team captain has continued to prove that dropping her was a mistake since France crashed out of the tournament with an impressive start to her campaign.

Despite her good start to the year, Renard still wasn’t picked for the latest France squad.

Selma Bacha eclipses Renard record

Wendie Renard wasn’t the only one making history for Lyon following their win against Wolfsburg.

Renard’s club teammate Selma Bacha became the youngest player to ever reach 60 appearances in the Champions League.

Bacha actually surpassed her captain’s previously held record, with the milestone appearance coming days after her 25th birthday.

The defender marked her record appearance in style, with an assist for Ada Hegerberg against Wolfsburg.

Bacha has been one of the most consistent performers for both club and country in the past few years and she is already building up an impressive career at a young age.
