Alex Greenwood has signed a contract extension that will keep her at Manchester City until 2027.
Her existing contract ran until the summer of 2026.
The England international signed for City in 2020 from Lyon, and in those five years the 32-year-old has played 152 games, winning two major honours and featured in the Professional Footballers’ Association WSL Team of the Year three times.
She has also been part of the Lionesses’ squad that has won two successive Euros.
She was appointed as club captain in 2024 following the retirement of Steph Houghton.
“I’m really happy to stay here,” Greenwood said in a statement shared by the club. “It’s the club I love and the club I want to be successful at, and I’m really happy to be here for another two years.
“Personally, I have so much unfinished business to be done, and I love this football club. It feels like home to me now and I feel this is where I belong and meant to be.”
Manchester City Women director of football Therese Sjogran added: “We’re absolutely delighted that Alex has signed a new deal with the club. She’s one of the world’s best in her position and a real leader.
“It’s difficult to put into words how important she is on and off the pitch, and I know my respect and admiration for her as a player is shared by everyone at City.
“We’re excited by the direction this team is going in this season and beyond and extending Alex’s contract was key to those ambitions.”
Alex Greenwood: We are looking to achieve something special
Asked about what it means to be captain of City going forward, Greenwood said: “It really is a privilege, honestly. The girls themselves are incredible to work with, they’re my friends as well.
“They’re not just team-mates, they’re people I really care about as human beings and that’s really important to me as captain.
“It’s understanding people before they’re players and that’s the balance I try to get right a lot because we are humans at the end of the day. We spend a lot time together and we do have a great group of girls who really want to push each other every day to achieve something special here.
“I’ve got a really good feeling about this group. It’s a responsibility, but one I really enjoy to do and hopefully there’s a reward at the end of it.”
