The one thing missing from Everton performance against Manchester City, according to Brian Sorensen

Everton did everything right against Manchester City, says head coach Brian Sorensen – apart from winning the game.

City won 2-1 with goals from Vivianne Miedema and Bunny Shaw – a win that put them on top of the Barclays Women’s Super League.

But the Toffees, roared on by their fans at Goodison Park, were threatening every time they went forward, with Kelly Gago’s goal the only end product.

And Sorensen thought his team were unlucky to not take anything away from the match.

“I’m super gutted on behalf of the girls,” he told the club’s official television channel afterwards. “They put everything in to get the first win at home here in front of all our fantastic fans, so I’m super disappointed. We did everything right except winning the game.”

He added: “I’m a bit lost for words because the girls didn’t deserve that.”

Brian Sorensen: We’re on the right path

Asked what his focus would be with the squad in the days and weeks to come, Sorensen went on: “Keep doing what we’re doing, because we’re on the right path.

“We’re getting players back from injury, still today we have to manage minutes, but everyone that came on the pitch did a tremendous job for the player next to her, and that’s how I want to see my team, and I’m super proud of them.”

With several key members of the squad on their way back from injury, fitness continues to be a consideration when Sorensen is picking his team.

“Keep building and keep building those fitness levels…so everyone is just ready to do those 90 minutes,” he said. “That’s what we need to try to add on and hopefully keeping players healthy and keep adding on, because there’s a lot of quality in the team and the squad.”

Everton are currently third from bottom of the WSL, on five points – four points ahead of second-bottom Liverpool.

Their next match is a trip to West Ham United next Sunday, 16th November. The Hammers sit bottom of the table, with one point to their credit.
