Lotte Wubben-Moy might have been disappointed that Arsenal came out of their Women’s Super League clash with Chelsea with only a single point.
But she was very happy that Alessia Russo got the goal her performance deserved in the 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium.
“Lessi, unbelievable,” the centre-half said to the club’s official website.
“She was everywhere, all over the pitch, rolling inside, outside. I think players know that Lessi’s going to do that, but they still can’t get the ball off of her.
“We train against her every week, but to see her doing it on the pitch against Chelsea, absolutely nullifying their defence, it was her just [deserts] to get that goal.”
Wubben-Moy returned to the starting line-up in place of Laia Codina, partnering Steph Catley in defence in the continuing absence of the injured Leah Williamson.
Lotte Wubben-Moy: The fans are proud of us
Wubben-Moy is an Arsenal fan and has been since childhood, and admitted that the atmosphere at the ground was thrilling for a closely-contested London derby full of drama and controversy.
Russo got Arsenal’s only permitted goal of the game in the 87th minute after Johanna Rytting Kaneryd put the visitors in front in the ninth minute.
The Gunners had two goals ruled out – one for handball against Stina Blackstenius, and what looked to be Frida Maanum’s late winner for offside – but closer inspection suggested that the decisions were marginal at best.
“I had shivers,” said Wubben-Moy of the atmosphere. “Maybe that’s not a performance advantage, but that feeling, it overcomes you. I’m obviously a lifelong Gooner, I’d be sat in the stands if I wasn’t on the pitch, supporting the girls like the fans are today.
“It’s definitely something that gives us that extra edge. This is our home, these are our people, and we want to do it week in, week out for them.
“Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the three points, and I think that’s disappointing. But I think the reception that we had from the fans at the end of the game showed that even if we didn’t get the win, they’re proud of us, and it’s something to build on.”
