France head coach Laurent Bonadei has addressed concerns over his future ahead of his side’s Nations League clash with Germany.

Les Bleus host Germany in the second-leg of their semi-final on Tuesday night, after losing 1-0 in Dusseldorf on Friday.

In an even match, the two sides were only separated by a 79th-minute winner from Klara Buhl.

Bonadei was appointed as head coach with the aim of leading France to their first major international trophy in women’s football.

After a promising start at Euro 2025, including a win over England, France ultimately crashed out of the quarter-finals to Germany.

What did France head coach Laurent Bonadei say about his future?

Speaking to the press ahead of tonight’s game with Germany, France head coach Laurent Bonadei pushed aside concerns over his future.

He said that his goal is to reach the semi-finals of the 2027 Women’s World Cup in two years.

He said: “I have a medium-term goal, which is the 2027 World Cup, with the objective of reaching the semi-finals, that’s clear.

“The intermediate objectives are to make sure the team progresses. And honestly, whether it’s at the Euros or now, I’m playing in competitions and I’m building the team to win.

“At the moment, I’m not focused on my personal situation; I’m focused on Tuesday’s game, on how my players will be able to score more goals than the opponent.

“It would be inappropriate for me to ask myself questions about my contract. It is the France team that counts above all.”

Could Bonadei lose his job if France lose to Germany?

L’Equipe has reported that although scrutiny is growing on Bonadei, he is unlikely to lose his job if France fail to reach the Nations League final.

The Nations League presents perhaps France’s best chance of winning a major trophy.

Should they fall short at the semi-final stage, it would be the second time they have crashed out to Germany at a major competition this year.

France were in the top-three favourites to win Euro 2025 alongside England and Spain, before they lost to Germany on penalties in the quarter-finals.

Germany have a strong squad which includes captain Giulia Gwinn, who made her first international start since suffering a tournament-ending injury at Euro 2025, during the first leg.

Les Bleus will hope to compete in the Nations League final against Spain or Sweden, with the former holding a 4-0 victory going into Tuesday’s second legs.

France’s record at major tournaments

The closest France have come to a major trophy was the inaugural edition of the Women’s Nations League.

France finished as runners-up to Spain after losing 2-0 in the final after goals from Aitana Bonmati and Mariona Caldentey.

However, they have never reached the final of either the World Cup or European Championship. France reached the semi-finals of Euro 2022 and the World Cup back in 2011.
