Defending champions Gotham FC are celebrating getting through to the semi-finals of the CONCACAF W Champions Cup for the second successive season.
They drew 0-0 with Washington Spirit at Subaru Park, meaning they now have ten points in the group stage of the competition.
And with third-place Monterrey on only three points with two games remaining, it means Gotham can’t be caught and will now definitely progress from Group B.
“We are the reigning champions of this competition,” said Gotham FC coach Juan Carlos Amorós. “We want to make sure it stays that way. This was something that was one of our targets for the second half of the year, and we’re very happy to achieve it.”
Gotham went unbeaten in the group stage – and remain unbeaten in the competition across both seasons so far.
They now have a ten-match undefeated streak.
Washington Spirit can also progress. They have seven points in the group stage, and if they win their remaining match – against Monterrey – would top the group.
In Group A, Orlando Pride lost 2-0 to Club America earlier in the week. They too have a chance of reaching the semi-finals but will need to beat Pachuca in their remaining match.
Clubs return to NWSL action
All three US teams now return to NWSL action this weekend. Orlando Pride travel to Houston Dash on Saturday, 4th October; Washington Spirit host San Diego Wave on Sunday, 5th October, and on the same day Gotham FC welcome Seattle Reign.
Washington Spirit are second in the NWSL table, with Gotham FC third. Orlando Pride are fifth.
The top eight after the regular season progress to a knock-out play-off event for the NWSL Championship. The table-toppers – who win the NWSL Shield – will be seeded first.
What is the CONCACAF W Champions Cup?
The CONCACAF W Champions Cup operates across North America, Central America and the Caribbean to determine the best women’s team in the region – like the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Its first instalment was last year. The teams that top the domestic leagues gain a place in the competition and then play a group stage followed by knockouts to find the champion.
Ten teams are competing this year, split into two groups of five. Washington Spirit and Gotham FC are joined in Group B by Monterrey, Vancouver Rise Academy, and Alianza Women.
Group A consists of America, Pachuca, Orlando Pride, Alajuelense and Chorrillo.
