Manchester City head coach Andree Jeglertz praised the strength of character displayed by Bunny Shaw as she took and converted two penalties in the 4-1 win over London City Lionesses in the Women’s Super League on Sunday.
That was despite missing a spot kick against Tottenham Hotspur last week.
The victory puts City up to third in the WSL table.
Bunny Shaw stepped up in the 69th and 89th minute to send both penalties past Elene Lete and make the closing stages of the match much more comfortable for the hosts at the Joie Stadium.
And Jeglertz said that missing a penalty was “mentally challenging” but added that her determination to take both on Sunday “shows she’s a strong personality and has belief in herself.”
Speaking to City’s official website, he added: “We believe in her by giving her the opportunity again so that’s very good for her. She’s now scored two and it will give her confidence.
“[Her strength in the air], it’s a very good tool for us to have that we can play fantastic football but also football what the opponent gives us.
“If she is that strong winning all the duels, keeping the ball up for us, then of course we should play that football.”
Andree Jeglertz: We need to be able to play a different way of winning football
Manchester City had already scored twice when Shaw grabbed her brace of penalties.
An unmarked Vivianne Miedema headed home in the 11th minute before Laura Blindkilde Brown doubled City’s advantage three minutes later.
Nikita Parris did get a goal back for the visitors after 19 minutes, which gave Jeglertz plenty to talk about during half-time, he revealed.
“I think the start of the game was definitely great, the first 20 to 25 minutes, we were very good.
“We had some problems when they pressed us high and we didn’t really find the right solution to it.
“We talked about it at half-time and the second half was under control and we created a couple of chances and we scored two goals.
“We played what the opponent was giving us and I think that’s something to have with us that they can give us different spaces and we need to be able to play a different way of winning football.”
City’s next match is at home next weekend when they face Arsenal, on Saturday, 4th October.
London City Lionesses next play on Sunday, 5th October, when they host Liverpool.
