Finland and Iceland kicked off Euro 2025 on Wednesday afternoon and during the tournament opener, the teams made history with a record 29 shots taken between them.
Although there was just one goal in the first match at Euro 2025 there was certainly no shortage of action in Stockhorn Arena, with nearly 30 shots taken between the teams.
The 29 shots between the teams meant history was made on day 1 of the Euros, as there has never been a game with that many attempts to kick off the tournament since Opta began recording stats in 2011.
Finland were able to have 16 shots, while Iceland recorded slightly less at 13. The conversion rate for both teams was slightly disappointing though, with just eight shots on target in total and one goal scored between the teams.
Finland shock Iceland
Despite being 55 places behind Iceland in the FIFA World Rankings, it was Finland who took home all three points from the first game at Euro 2025.
With 29 shots taken by both teams combined it is hard to imagine that just one goal was scored but the game was very close regardless of the high amount of attempts.
It was Iceland who arguably cost themselves a result against Finland, as an individual error meant that the favourites were reduced to 10 players with just over half an hour left to play.
Hildur Antonsdóttir was shown a straight red in the 60th minute for a studs up challenge and from then on, her teammates were on the back foot.
A screamer from Katariina Kosola ten minutes after the dismissal secured Finland all three points. The win for Finland was a huge one for the country, who hadn’t won a game at the Euros since 2009.
Finland move on from Iceland to a much tougher test when they face Norway, who were able to scrape past tournament hosts in Switzerland on matchday 1.
Iceland on the other hand will play a Switzerland side that will feel hard done by after a disappointing loss to Norway and that clash could be equally as challenging.
