Wallsend Win Northumberland Cup

Wallsend Boys' Club Ladies defeated Newcastle United Reserves in the BlueFin Insurance Northumberland FA Women's Cup Final.

Wallsend's Lynsey Wilkinson had the game's first chance but fluffed her shot when through on goal, before Newcastle's Elizabeth Fraser was just wide with a sliding effort.

Siobhan Jones had a couple of chances in quick succession for United, the first blocked and the second saved by Claudia Moan.

Jess Clark had a low drive kept out by Moan but moments afterwards, a crunching tackle dispossesed a Magpies defender and the ball was squared for Wilkinson to score.

A couple of minutes around the hour mark did much to determine the winners, as Wilkinson was played through to hit the top corner from 12 yards, before Amy Hargrave won a penalty for United but the spot-kick by Jones was saved.

Elizabeth Campbell skied a late chance for Wallsend from close range but when Newcastle conceded poassession, Zoe Hornby smashed in Wallsend's third.

Hargrave had two efforts cleared off the line in stoppage-time, as Wallsend keeper Katie McTague maintained a clean sheet.

More Challenges Yet For Wallsend

While Newcastle finished third in the FAWPL Reserve North Division, Wallsend will do likewise in the North East Premier if they beat Oughtibridge at Kirkley Park on Sunday.

They then complete their season on 21st May, with a League Cup Final against champions Barnsley at Willberfoss Sports & Social Club.
