The last eight teams in the UEFA Women’s Champions League discovered not only their quarter-final opponents today but also potential semi-final opposition.
FCF Juvissy Essonne v Göteborg
Olympique Lyonnais v FC Malmö
Arsenal v ASD Torres
VfL Wolfsburg v FC Rossiyanka
Ties to be played 20/21 & 27/28 March – first drawn teams home in first leg
Arsenal / ASD Torres v VfL Wolfsburg / FC Rossiyanka
Olympique Lyonnais / FC Malmö v FCF Juvissy Essonne / Göteborg
Ties to be played 13/14 & 20/21 April – first drawn teams home in first leg
The first two ties drawn set French teams against Swedish opposition, with Olympique Lyonnais looking to make history by taking the title for a third consecutive season, as they face Malmö who got as far as the semi-finals in 2004, while Juvissy Essonne are in the last eight for the second time, Göteborg for the first.
Arsenal compete in the last eight for a record 11th time and will be up against Italy’s ASD Torres, who make their second showing at this stage of the competition. The winners will play either VfL Wolfsburg or Rossiyanka for a place in the final at Stamford Bridge on 23 May 2013. Despite a first quarter-final berth, Wolfsburg are considered serious challengers to Lyon’s crown, while Russia’s Rossiyanka have had one previous quarter-final experience.
The UEFA Women’s Champions League Final Ambassador, Faye White, had this to say about her side Arsenal, before the draw:
Faye White: Looking forward to #UWCL draw. Lyon the big team all will want to avoid. Then for me Wolfsburg & Rossiyanka will be tough opponents/trips
And then here’s some of the Twitter (players & fans) reaction to the draw:

Kieran Theivam: And they’ll play the winner of Wolfsburg and Rossiyanka, should they go through. Did well to avoid Lyon, the team to beat for sure!

Donna Kebab: Nobody’s a guaranteed winner but I do believe @ArsenalLadies have the qlty 2 take the competition all the way 2 the Bridge
Everton Ladies Fans: A great draw for the Gunners, could go all the way! Final in England #GoodluckGooners
Adam BARLOW: Arsenal fans seem to be pretty much writing there 1/4 final opponents off and looking to semi already. Overconfident maybe?
Carmen Wales: Best imaginable (does this word even exist? LOL) draw out of the remaining teams for the @ArsenalLadies 😉 #UWCL Semi final absolutely possible! Then very likely off to another strong German team! If not THE strongest team in GER and Europe besides Lyon 😉 great times and games ahead! #UWCL
Thora Helgadottir (Malmo GK): So we got Lyon in the quarter finals – I guess we’re the underdogs which is just fine by me #wcl #ldbfcmalmö
