Romania edged into second spot in Group 3 when inflicting a seventh defeat in a row for Albania but trail leaders France by eight points. Twenty-two year old Stefania Vatafu struck just before the break and completed her hat-trick with a couple more in the last quarter.
Sweden made it five straight wins in Group 4 with a 4-0 success in Poland, despite it being 5 minutes short of the interval before Amanda Ilestedt got the first goal. Lotta Schelin, Kosovare Asllani and Fridolina Rolfö added one apiece in the last half-hour.
Denmark had a similar outcome against Slovakia but remain five points behind the Swedes. Pernille Harder’s opener was added to by a Nadia Nadim brace that included a penalty, with Sanne Troelsgaard completing the scoring in added time.
Russia’s 2-0 defeat of Turkey lifted them into second position in Group 5 behind runaway leaders Germany. Ekaterina Pantyukhina broke the deadlock after 47 minutes and Nadezhda Karpova netted the second, with victory confirmed with a late red card for the visitors.
Norway dropped their first points in Group 8 in a top of the table clash with Austria. Nina Burger opened the scoring for the Austrians and Maren Mjelde levelled midway through the first half. Isabel Herlovesen had the home side in front before the hour mark only for Laura Feiersinger to equalise in the final five minutes. Norway play Wales on Tuesday at Newport Stadium, kick off 5pm.
Kazakhstan got off the bottom at Israel’s expense, having defeated them by the only goal of the game. Mariya Yalova scored on 69 minutes and the hosts survived having a player sent off with 3 minutes to go.
