Glasgow Girls FC’s Chloe Docherty has been voted as the winner of the Scottish Building Society SWPL Player of the Month for March 2019. The midfielder wins the award for the first time after being nominated last season in September.

Docherty helped her side remain in the battle for the Scottish Building Society SWPL 2 title by scoring four goals across the month. This included their only goal in a 1-1 draw with Hamilton Academical and a hat-trick in their 7-0 demolition of Hutchison Vale.

Speaking from Hampden Park, she said: “It’s a great feeling to win this award for the first time. Being nominated last season was a great personal achievement but I’m delighted to have gone one step further. March was a great month on the field and I’m pleased to have played my part for the team.”

Docherty’s biggest moment of the month was the stunning opener against Hamilton Academical, a game they eventually drew. “I’d gone short to offer an option from the corner,” she said. “The ball was crossed in so I dropped towards the edge of the box to see where the ball would land. When it was cleared out, it came towards me and sat perfectly for the hit. It’s easily one of the best goals I’ve ever scored.”

Glasgow Girls are currently third in the league (at time of writing), just two points from top. They’ve only suffered defeat once this season in the league, away to FC Kilmarnock, and have only conceded three goals in their five games.

“We’ve definitely tried to make ourselves hard to beat. Since John (Doyle) has come in as Head Coach, that has been area of focus. We all work hard for each other and that has shown on the pitch and with our results. I’ve had a strong month when it comes to attacking but our defensive work is just as important.”

Jacki Hamilton, Mortgage Advisor for Scottish Building Society, said: “Congratulations to Chloe and Glasgow Girls. They’ve had a great start to 2019 and made themselves contenders for the league title.”

Also nominated for the March award were Amy Anderson (Hamilton Academical), Jamie-Lee Napier (Hibernian), and Kelly Clark (Celtic).

Jacki added: “This was an extremely close month when it came to voting and all four players were deserving nominees. We had just shy of 2,000 votes, so we’d like to say thank you to all who voted and another well done to the nominees.”
