Scottish Building Society SWPL 1 leaders Glasgow City just did enough to defeat Forfar Farmington, while Hibernian won 3-1 at Celtic to leapfrog their hosts into second place.
Glasgow City held onto the league leadership with a narrow 1-0 win over top flight returnees Forfar Farmington. Christie Murray scored her first goal on her return to the club to break the deadlock after 74 minutes. Forfar might well have levelled in added time but Danni McGinley was denied by the post.
Hibernian are just three goals short of the reigning champions following a good 3-1 victory away to Celtic. Rachel McLauchlan scored the opener when tapping in Abi Harrison’s header at the back postand doubled her tally early in the second half with an impressive solo effort. Celtic’s Nicole Pullar grabbed a goal back shortly after but Harrison volleyed in Hibs’ third with five minutes to play.
Rangers ran out 4-0 winners at Hamilton Academical, for whom the result was a fifth successive defeat. Clare Gemmell’s first-half free-kick was all that separated the sides at the interval but Sarah Robertson made it 2-0 with a curling effort from the edge of the box. In the last 10 minutes, Gemmell got her second from a Jade Gallon cross and Hayley Sinclair played in Brogan Hay to score.
Spartans and Stirling University stayed in fifth and sixth spot respectively after they finished all square at one goal apiece. Katy Morris marked her last match for Stirling with a looping header to put them one up but Spartans equalised direct from a Simone McMahon corner midway through the second half.
Motherwell go clear in SWPL 2
Motherwell moved two points clear at the top of SWPL 2 when hitting St Johnstone for six, three of those coming from Suzanne Mulvey in a mad spell of a little over five minutes. Hayley Cunningham bagged a brace, including one straight in from a corner kick, as ‘Well led 5-0 at half-time. An own-goal by the unfortunate Rihanna Tweedie completed the scoring in the second half.
Hearts are into second position after a 4-1 result over Aberdeen. Pamela Liddell scored in either half, Lauren Hall helping to give Hearts a 3-0 advantage. Ellen Reid replied for the Dons but Stacey Hutchinson rounded off the scoring for the home side.
Kilmarnock slipped to third when held to a 2-2 draw at Edinburgh University Hutchison Vale. Killie took the lead on the counter but Hutchie hit back through Anna Hume and a Beth MacLeod volley. However, the visitors drew level before the interval and that is how it stayed.
Glasgow Girls got off the foot of the table at the expense of Central Girls Academy, who they edged by three goals to two with two efforts in the last 7 minutes. Lauren Evans did have them in front but Central took a 2-1 lead inside the first half-hour. Katie Hay equalised before Evans won it with a minute left of normal time.
